So, I’ve been on hiatus.
This summer—since May really—hasn’t been the best time. This hasn’t been a "if life hands you lemons" kind of time, more like "if life slams a mothertrucking bushel basket of lemons on your head" kind of time.
I haven’t been shouting it from the hill tops, but SoMedia and I parted ways in June. So that’s stressful. I’ve been on the hunt for a new gig for a few months now and maybe in another post I’ll riff on how the whole system for finding and hiring people seems absolutely broken at every level (job seekers, HR folks, hiring managers, everyone), but for the moment…I’m still looking.
If you’re interested, my dream job would be teaching people how to use technology (instructor, trainer, teacher, community ambassador—essentially a person who shows you how to get stuff done with tech), but since I’m not too bad at writing and social media…those are in the pool as well.
Right, losing a job. Tough, but…
In early June my Mom passed away. This wasn’t unexpected or sudden. She was diagnosed with inoperable, untreatable lung cancer over a year before (and only given a few months then), so while sad, I got an extra year with my Mom that I didn’t expect to have otherwise. I got to spend time with her last summer, over Christmas, and in May before she passed away. I’d been preparing myself for the loss for a while, it doesn’t really soften the blow, but I’d like to think it helped.
Together this put me into a none-too-pleasant place and I decided to just let posting or other writing take a back seat to just dealing with life. All writers know that there are times when expounding to the world just has to take a back seat.
So that’s what my summer has been like thus far.
But…let’s just turn the corner on that shall we?
